Urban Regeneration - Tideway

A redundant Power Station and Council Depot in Barnes, London, was scheduled for demolition when pressure from local residents persuaded the Council to retain the buildings and create a ‘Working Community’ for small businesses.

The competition winning design by Philip Lancashire restored the fine Mortlake High Street façade and converted the main buildings into design studios and workshops.

This urban regeneration project has won numerous awards. It won first prize as the
‘best refurbished waterside development in the UK since 1985’; the Times/RIBA Community Architecture Award, presented by HRH The Prince of Wales; the Business in the Community Conservation Award presented by the Director General of the CBI; and the Times /RICS Conservation Award

In their citation for this last award, the judges said:

‘This is an exceptionally fine scheme, restoring buildings in the heart of a Conservation Area and bringing back into use an area of derelict river frontage. Great care has been taken to use existing building materials, to match new materials to old in a sensitive way and to overcome the problems caused by the shallow depth of the riverside buildings with ingenuity and charm, by providing a decorative walkway. The small scale urban fabric has been respected and the result is a valuable local asset, with studios and workshops employing 200 people, a popular riverside wine bar and sports and social clubs. The project is a model of how relatively unpromising buildings can, with imagination, be turned into a rewarding public amenity.’
