Re-use of
Redundant Farm Buildings
Derelict
or redundant farm buildings are a valuable part of our rural
heritage and continue to be endangered by neglect or thoughtless
demolition. Instead, they may be seen as a valuable resource.
Whether they are cart sheds, barns, byres or pig-sties, all have
their distinctive characteristics and local idiosyncrasies, which
provide scope for imaginative re-use and profitable investment.
In order to conserve our rural heritage, planning authorities are
now encouraged to give permission for the conversion of redundant
farm buildings and will favourably consider a wide range of
commercial or residential uses.
To help with financing such projects, DEFRA runs a grant scheme
under their Farm Diversification Programme. Qualifying uses for the
re-use of redundant farm buildings, include conversion to holiday
cottages, offices, workshops, craft activities and many others.
Around 50% of farms in the UK supplement traditional farm incomes
through farm diversification.
Sometimes a magnificent rural site, lacks only one thing, a
traditional farm building. Philip Lancashire can supply historic oak
frames and structures for re-location. These have been rescued from
certain demolition and stored, with all the components numbered,
ready for re-assembly.
