Office Interiors

The office environment dominates the lives of millions of people around the world, yet the office, as a place of work, dates back less than 100 years. As the physical setting for service industries, general business and government, the office exerts a profound influence on the economy as a whole and on individual lifestyles.

In the recent past, the office and office buildings grew in complexity, culminating in the high-tech box, to which office workers were shackled, through their dependence on fixed equipment, inflexibly housed in such buildings and which was necessary for day to day work.

Now, a cluster of new inventions, the internet, email, the mobile phone and wireless networks have brought about a revolution, not just in the way we work, but in the potential of the way in which our working environment can be designed.

Released from dependence on fixed office equipment, the designer can respond to new styles of team based, knowledge driven ways of working and cater for that new phenomenon, the office ‘nomad’, who may just need a solo space, a hot desk, or occasional use of a meeting area.

No longer do we have to work in a bland, purpose designed box. New technology allows us to inhabit and work in any ‘found’ building, be it an old factory, warehouse or redundant farm building. Those working in our service oriented economy, can now enjoy an environment that offers a wide range of settings, full of character, stimulating and easily adaptable. There is now a new definition of what may be termed the high performance workplace, one that will attract and retain the best staff. Good workplaces are simply good business.
