Gypsy Wagon Restoration

Gypsy Wagon Restoration

We have supervised the restoration of a number of gypsy wagons for clients, who have used them as a garden office, playroom, extra sleeping accommodation, or simply as a private retreat.

Roald Dahl was so enamoured of his that it inspired his childrens classic 'Danny the Champion of the World', Billy Connolly strums his banjo in his, while Madonna's was said to be hotly fought over in divorce proceedings.

As the picture opposite shows, gypsy wagons quickly deteriorate if they are not maintained and adequately protected  from winter weather.

In this example, rescued from total neglect in a farmyard, two of the wheels had collapsed, the roof covering was no longer waterproof and all four corners  had become rotten and unstable.

We were able to source wheelwrights, metalworkers, wood carvers and decorative artists to completely restore this derelict ‘showmans’ wagon to pristine condition.

Few gypsy wagons survive, but they can be sourced, usually in very poor condition and as the accompanying pictures show, they can be saved from destruction and fully restored.
