The Circus Space

This project has the distinction of being mentioned by Nikolaus Pevsner, whose Buildings of England praised it as an important set of buildings ‘sympathetically converted by Philip Lancashire’.

Philip Lancashire was called in to prepare a master plan for the set of derelict buildings that comprised the redundant power station in Hoxton. This would be the new home of The Circus Space, one of the key projects in the London Borough of Hackney’s successful programme of locally co-ordinated urban regeneration initiatives.

The architectural strategy was to prepare a plan which encompassed The Circus Space’s long-term objectives for the site, but could be broken down into a number of manageable, stand alone phases to be implemented as funds became available over time.

The Shoreditch Power Station was transformed into the UK’s first National Centre for Contemporary Circus Arts.

The Circus Space is now firmly rooted as a high profile member of the local cultural community and has helped to establish the Hoxton Cultural Quarter as a focal point for the arts and cultural industries.
