Barn
and Farmhouse Interiors
Industrial and agricultural buildings have an architectural integrity that defies camouflage behind traditional decoration. Bare stone or brick, wooden boards or steel joists, these all form the perfect foil for more sensuous furnishing materials that can be introduced to bring softness and comfort to hard surfaces.
The sheer architectural scale of some of the spaces is also an opportunity for selecting offbeat finds from junk shops or architectural salvage yards that will not be dwarfed by their surroundings.
These barns and farmhouses all have under-floor heating systems on the ground and upper floors to free up the arrangement of furniture. In areas that have been extended, an appropriately aged texture has been achieved by using reclaimed materials.
Salvaged oak for beams, lintels and flooring, traditional oak doors and hand-wrought iron door handles all contribute to providing a sympathetic background for antique furniture, and gives a sense of architectural continuity with the original building.
The finishing touches, provided by the client, with their collections of furniture and
artefacts, completes the transformation from redundant farm building into a welcoming, modern home. |
